An e-cigarette is a type of device that uses electrical energy to convert a liquid into an inhalable aerosol. It typically consists of a battery, control circuitry, a liquid-storage component, a heating element, and a mouthpiece. The liquid may contain nicotine, or it may be labelled nicotine-free; this difference affects the ingredients and the scope of regulation, but it does not change the basic process of electrically heated vaporisation. An “e-cigarette” is not a product with a fixed formulation or uniform performance. The same outer shape can house different liquids, heating structures, and control programmes. Therefore, when discussing a particular study, one must ask which device, which liquid, and what conditions of use were studied. Generalising the results of a single product to all products can easily lead to distortion.
Consider a classification example: two devices are both called e-cigarettes by their sellers, one of which heats a liquid while the other heats tobacco material. Although both are battery-powered, they cannot directly share the same ingredient report. As another example, one liquid-based device claims to contain nicotine while another claims not to; the two devices may work on the same principle, yet their legal treatment still requires further distinction. Matching the physical object to the definition first, and only then discussing performance, can avoid a chain of misunderstandings that begins with the name.
Getting to know it can begin with three questions: what material is used, how the material is heated, and what is ultimately released. Appearance and name can only offer clues; ingredient documentation, device specifications, and emission measurements are what can answer these questions further. The fact that an e-cigarette does not burn ordinary cigarette tobacco does not mean it can be inferred to pose no health risk.
