The development of e-cigarettes is not simply a matter of "new models replacing old ones". Early devices commonly imitated the shape of combustible cigarettes; later came devices with larger e-liquid reservoirs and more adjustable parameters, as well as small pod systems and integrated disposable devices. To understand technological evolution, it is more useful to observe several continuous changes: whether the liquid can be refilled, whether the heating element can be replaced, whether the control circuit actively regulates output, and whether the device records or displays its status. Adding a screen does not necessarily mean the vaporisation principle has changed; shrinking the casing does not necessarily mean actual nicotine intake has decreased.

Development can also be observed through "which functions are integrated": the power supply and consumables that once had to be assembled separately may later be integrated into a single casing; states that once relied on the user's judgment may later be estimated and displayed by a chip. Integration sometimes reduces the number of steps, but it also makes repair and recycling more complicated. The history of the technology is therefore not just an upward curve of performance, but also includes how responsibility shifts among users, manufacturers, and waste handlers.

This history is useful for reading research. Emissions measured from older devices more than a decade ago cannot, without explanation, represent all of today's products. Conversely, newer products cannot claim to be safer merely because they were released later. Technological improvements need to be verified against specific indicators, while also observing whether they have changed the frequency of use and exposure levels.
